“Every artist was first an amateur.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

a quiet moment with Snoball

Where do you find beauty? Is it relegated strictly to museums and art galleries? Does beauty rely on perfection of form? I am neither an artist nor an art critic. It is not necessary to be either in order to find something extraordinary in the ordinary.

Life becomes so complicated that I am often obsessed  with minutia. Will I get an A on a school project? Am I performing above standard at work? Are all of the sweaters folded neatly? Has the dog been fed? The list seems unending! Amidst the chaos of everyday living, I overlook the beauty in the mundane. Everything holds a valuable place for someone. Because art is not self-evident it is up to me to determine what is appealing.

10 beautiful moments

  1. Yesterday my 12 year old American Eskimo, Snoball, visited the groomer. After a month or so rolling around in the yard, her soft fur become gray and dingy. Following a good bath and brushing, Snoball was transformed into a regal, fluffy white princess.
  2. Recently, one of my co-workers was changing clothes on a male mannequin when I noticed the naked sitting form resembled a quasi-pretzel. I immediately grabbed my camera and snapped a picture to remember the odd beauty.

Sitting on the couch with my laptop while both children are sleeping. There is an absence of noise except for the tapping of the keyboard and the gentle whirring of the ceiling fan. This moment is beautiful.

  4. The taste of coffee on my lips as I sip from a paper cup is beautiful.
  5. Yesterday, I went for a short (18.5 mile) ride with Yvonne. The beauty in that moment was that for the first time in a while, my tush did not ache from the moment I got on my bike. I had finally re-acclimated!
  6. Searching through the $5 DVD bin at Walmart with my husband Robert became a beautiful moment when I discovered a classic movie (Clash of the Titans; 1981) that we did not yet own but would purchase and watch later that evening in bed.
  7. Checking on Sam (13) who like most teenagers was still asleep at 10:30am. When I opened the door and glanced at him, peacefully unaware of the world around, he was beautiful.
  8. Recently, I tried on a new top at work and the moment became beautiful when I realized that I no longer needed an XL but fit perfectly in a M. This moment was so delightful, I nearly cried from overwhelming joy.
  9. In an attempt to rediscover my personal brand, I met for dinner with a friend, Jessica Torres. It was a beautiful moment when I realized that I am so much more than a customer experience connoisseur, and that I need my brand to reflect  me completely.
  10. This morning I had a beautiful moment with my daughter Avery. We are usually both so busy and rarely make time to go out to breakfast together. It was a simple pleasure that made me happy.

#trust30 prompt: To be an artist one has to find beauty in ordinary things. Find 10 things of great beauty in the landscape that surrounds you. For example, crumple sheets on your bed in the morning, the smell of coffee making its way around a busy office. (Author: Ana Guardia)
